Hommaly Portable Flatware Set Review

The Spruce Eats / Renu Dhar

Our reviewer was sent a sample of the Hommaly Portable Flatware Set to test. Keep reading for our full product review.

What do food trucks, meal delivery from your local restaurants, picnics at the park, lunch after hiking, airplane mealtimes, boba tea shops, the food court at the malls, and eating at your desk at work have in common? The presence of single-use plastic utensils and straws.

They are cheap and convenient and hence found everywhere. But they are also one of the most common pollutants of our oceans and a prolific form of waste. In order to reduce waste, you may have already started to refuse a plastic straw with your water at the restaurant and pack your utensils along for lunch at work.  But there may still be times when you might need a straw or flatware. And we all know how borrowing a couple of flatware pieces from your kitchen drawer goes—one fine day you are wondering whatever happened to the spoons that were in there. They are either sitting in the lost and found at your kids’ school or simply forgotten inside a camping backpack. Having a compact and organized way to carry reusable utensils ensures that your kitchen utensils do not mysteriously vanish and that you are always prepared to say no to plastic utensils.

I tested the Hommaly Portable Flatware Set to check if I would in fact be more organized about carrying my own utensils and have a more pleasant eating experience than with plastic utensils. Read on for my thoughts about it.

Testing Insight

A regular dishwashing cycle got the knife, spoon, fork and the chopsticks shining again.

Design: Compact and Fun

The set includes a dinner knife, fork, spoon, chopsticks, cleaning brush, straight straw, and a bent straw—all encased in a subtle gray felt carrying case. The entire package is sleek and keeps everything organized. The interior of the case is lined with an aluminum lining that is easy to clean. The case fit into my handbag for easy transportation to work and I was also able to leave it inside a drawer at my desk. However, the cutlery spilled out as soon as I opened the zipper on the case if I rushed things. Opening it carefully and only halfway through contained the utensils while letting me fish for what I wanted from the pack.

The flatware comes in many fun color choices like black, gold, rainbow, and rose gold. It is also available in an elegant silver. Made with 18/8 stainless steel, the utensils are resistant to corrosion and sturdy. They come in two sizes—portable and full. While I liked the former for being more transportable, the fork was just a tad bit on the smaller side. All the utensils, except the knife, have a well-rounded construction and the fork tines are fairly smooth. The knife edge is serrated and relatively sharp, but the top end of the knife was rough and not completely rounded.

Upkeep: There isn’t much

The good news is that I didn’t have to spend time ‘polishing the silver’. A regular dishwashing cycle got the knife, spoon, fork, and the chopsticks shining again. They were pretty easy to handwash as well. A quick scrub with soap and rinse were all they needed. I cleaned both the straws with the included brush dipped in some soap solution and then rinsed them out under hot water. The case is also washable, making cleaning super easy.

Testing Insight

The entire package is sleek and keeps everything organized.

Price: Affordable

Retailing between $8 and $10 depending on the color you chose to buy, you get all the utensils you will need for a variety of uses. You can carry your reusable cup for a 3 p.m. iced latte and use the straw to drink from it on the go. It’s a functional set for picnics, camping, and office use. And while traveling, this set came in handy for all the meal deliveries I ordered. Since each set comes in its own carrying case, each member of the family can have their own set.
