This post is part of our 'This Is Fire' series, where our editors and writers tell you about the products they can't live without in the kitchen.

My mom is a gifted home chef who ran a co-op out of our basement through my childhood, and I credit her for my own prowess: I never went to culinary school, but instead grew up beside her in the kitchen, helping her scoop and measure and stir as she made everything from scratch.

Without ever having to spend time as a line cook, I’ve worked as a chef on and off since the age of 19, and when I moved into my first apartment, she gave me everything I needed to get started cooking at home. Much of that fare has been replaced over the decades, while I still own other pieces of equipment, such as a rarely used apple corer and cherry pitter. My Oxo peeler is one of those pieces, too, even though I’ve used it with regularity for over 25 years.

I absolutely refuse to move on from this vegetable peeler.

OXO Good Grips Vegetable Peeler

I’ve had countless other peelers in my kitchen from assorted partners I’ve lived with over the years, but no matter how great someone claimed a peeler was (Ceramic! Serrated! Y-shaped!) I found myself nonplussed with every single one. I can’t recall if my mother gave this to me new or if it was already a hand-me-down, as things from her have always been a mixture of the two. And I have no clue whatsoever how this thing manages to keep on trucking, without the blade having dulled to nothing by now.

The Oxo peeler has a comfortable grip, which is what the company is known for, as well as a swivel head. One of my favorite ways to make vegetables more fun is to ribbon them, and I love this peeler for making decorations and garnishes out of everything from asparagus to cucumbers to carrots. It works lightning fast, has never been sharpened, and has no signs of rust despite having been run through the dishwasher countless times.

It feels like home, works perfectly, and no other peeler fits as naturally in my hand or glides as smoothly.

Having cooked in well over a hundred different homes during my in-home private chef years, I’m no stranger to the wide variety of vegetable peelers out there. And while I’ve upgraded much of my own cookware based on what I enjoyed using in other’s homes, such as my All Clad pans and Shun knife set, I absolutely refuse to move on from this vegetable peeler. It feels like home, works perfectly, and no other peeler fits as naturally in my hand or glides as smoothly. I get my Shuns professionally sharpened frequently enough to be clear—and to know I’m particular—about the difference between a working blade and a dull one, and I swear, this peeler is still going strong.

The most surprising aspect of my lifelong adventure with this peeler is that I’m not a fan of vintage items in general. I like homes built within the last decade, clothes that I’m the first to wear, and I have no shame about reaching into the back of the dairy case to get the farthest away expiration date. But this vegetable peeler and I will continue doing life together until one of us calls it quits—and at this point in the game, I might consider putting my money on that peeler over my own ailing hands.
