This post is part of our 'This Is Fire' series, where our editors and writers tell you about the products they can't live without in the kitchen.

If you’ve ever made simple vinaigrettes at home, thrown together a roasted chicken, or baked a lemon pound cake, you know how important a reliable citrus juicer is to the finished product. Acid is that magic ingredient that balances flavor profiles.

I’ll admit, I’ve tried them all in my search for juicing perfection.

For a while I thought the two-pronged squeeze-style in zesty colors would be the gold at the end of the rainbow, but I found I needed three different size models to accommodate the types of fruit I juiced. It also splooged juice out at me, often in my eye, with too much pressure.

Frustrated, I picked up an electric model. Juice was tightly contained in an awaiting container, but this bulky option wasn’t great enough to score permanent space on my counter. And when the power went out during Hurricane Michael on Florida’s Panhandle, and I was cooking over a grill for weeks, I had to resort to juicing by hand.

I found my juicer soulmate on the gadget shelf at my local Williams Sonoma. It’s not complicated, doesn’t require an outlet, and is easily portable when I’m cooking away from home.

I’ve used everything from electric juicers to two-pronged squeeze styles to manuals with attached receptacles—this classic remains my favorite.

This simple citrus reamer beckoned with its sunny yellow color and ease of operation—I could juice any size citrus by hand with excellent yield and, in fact, better than when I just juiced manually. And yes, I’m that person that looks at a juiced lemon, and wonders if there’s not just a little more I could have squeezed out.

The comfortable grip never causes hand fatigue (even with my carpal-tunnel-riddled wrists) and offers ultimate control over how much juice I squeeze. I confidently juice lemons over awaiting shrimp scampi, make short work of an orange for my cranberry sauce bubbling away on the stove, and drain limes of their last vestige of juice for pitchers of mojitos.

When I’m making mimosas, there is nothing like the fresh, pulpy juice I get from a couple of oranges with this superstar.

I’ve used everything from electric juicers to two-pronged squeeze styles to manuals with attached receptacles—this classic remains my favorite. There are no moving parts to break and no nooks and crannies to hide food debris—just a straightforward tool that works so much better than your hands and yields three times the juice.

If you’re someone who isn’t looking for the latest gadget, just a reliable tool, and you aren’t afraid of getting a little juice on your hands, this reamer deserves a spot in your kitchen arsenal (and your camping gear, as well).
